REPEATS AS MEAC CHAMPION

LANDOVER, Md. – The North Carolina A&T State men won the 2018
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) indoor track & field championship
on Saturday in the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex, thanks to
a dominating performance.
Despite coming into the final day trailing, the Aggies won five titles
on Saturday to record 144 points and take the crown for the second year
in a row. Hampton finished second with 108 points.
Duane Ross was named the meet’s Outstanding Coach for the second year in
a row.
By sweeping both the men’s and women’s indoor titles, North Carolina A&T
State becomes the first MEAC school to repeat in both the men and women
since Delaware State in 1987.
The first men’s title of the day was a thriller, with North Carolina A&T
State’s Marquise McGee making a last-lap move for the lead and holding
off Hampton’s Emmanuel Too to take gold in the mile run. McGee ran a
4:21.61 to Too’s 4:21.66.
Rodney Rowe ran a 21.36 to win the 200-meter dash a year after finishing
second in the event. He was also part of the Aggies’ 4x400-meter relay
team that took the MEAC title after running a 3:14.60.
Michael Dickson ran a 7.85 to win the 60-meter hurdles, while Lasheon
Strozier won the triple jump, leaping 49 feet, 6.5 inches to take gold.
Demek Kemp of South Carolina State, who came into the meet ranked in the
top five in the nation in the 60-meter dash, held true to form in
exciting fashion, running a 6.65 to edge out the Aggies’ Jaylan Mitchell
– who ran a 6.66.
Rowe was third with a 6.74.
Too was named the meet’s Outstanding Runner, while Bethune-Cookman’s
Jeremiah Peters was named Outstanding Field Performer. Peters won the
shot put with a mark of 54 feet, 5.25 inches.
Dominic Harper gave Bethune-Cookman another field title on Saturday,
clearing 15 feet in the pole vault to take gold.
Anteneh Girma ran an 8:52.13 to win the 3,000-meter run, his second
title of the meet.

Chouati leads Hawks in MEAC finale

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University honored four senior players prior to the start of its contest with Maryland Eastern Shore, and the Eagles followed that up with a 77-49 win over the Hawks on Saturday, Feb. 17 at McDougald-McLendon Arena.
NCCU (13-13, 7-5 MEAC) led MDES (6-22, 2-11 MEAC) wire-to-wire, though the teams were separated by less than five points through the first 10 minutes of the game. The Eagles were able to create some separation in the tail end of the half, but the Hawks hung close as NCCU went to the intermission with a 33-28 lead.
The Eagles came surging out of the locker room to start the second half, and led by as many as 20 on its way to breaking a three-game slide, 77-49. 28 points is the largest margin of victory for the Eagles in a regular season MEAC game, since NCCU defeated Howard by 35, 74-39 on Jan. 23, 2017.
Senior Pablo Rivas (Colón, Panama) had a great night with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds, and senior Dominique Reid (Sicklerville, N.J.) dropped in eight points with five boards. Reggie Gardner, Jr. (Bowie, Md.) hit three treys for 14 points, and John Guerra (Cary, N.C.) hit a new career-high with 13 points. Jordan Perkins (Greensboro, N.C.) had a full game with nine point, eight assists, and six rebounds.
Ahmad Frost (Toledo, Ohio) led the Hawks in scoring with 18 points, and Miryne Thomas (Cleveland, Ohio) followed with nine points and seven rebounds.

WSSU notches first win of 2018 and first road win of the season

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (5-19, 3-11 CIAA) ended several skids when the team took a 67-64 road win over the Fayetteville State Broncos (7-18, 4-10 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The Rams made several clutch plays to claim their first win of 2018 and their first road win of the season.
The Rams took the win behind one of their best performances of the season as the team shot 40.0% (20-of-50) from the floor and committed just nine turnovers in the game. WSSU junior forward William Crandell led the way for the Rams with 22 points and seven rebounds in the game while junior forward Derrick Farquharson added 17 points as well.
The Rams had a slow start to the game, but the team was able to climb back into the game by the end of the first half. The early going belonged to the Broncos as the Rams fell behind, 2-15 with a jumper from junior guard Jalyn McKoy serving as the team’s only field goal of the first eight minutes of the game. The Rams would climb back later in the half with a 10-2 run that included a pair of free throws from junior guard Derick Brewer, Jr. free throws that pulled the team to within three points, 17-14, midway through the half. The Rams would fall behind once again by as many as eight points, but the team would not relent. The Rams clamped down on defense, allowing just one FSU field goal in the final four minutes of the half to claw their way back into the game. A Crandell dunk with 2:39 left in the half capped a 6-1 WSSU run and gave the team a 31-30 lead over the Broncos. From there, the Rams went ahead by as many as thre points before taking a 33-33 tie into the locker room at halftime.
As dramatic as the first half was, it was a calm one compared to the first half. The Rams opened the half with seven unanswered points to take an early 40-33 lead after a Farquharson lay-up with 16:50 left to play. The tables turned near the midway point of the half with Fayetteville State taking a 49-47 lead with 10:10 left to play. From there, the two teams kept battling back and forth with neither team going ahead by more than three points and set up a dramatic ending to the game. Fayetteville State struck first with a free throw that left the Rams trailing, 64-62 with 00:49 left to play. From there, the Rams scored five unanswered points with a Crandell three-point play followed by Farquharson free throw with 00:12 left to play that left the Rams on top, 67-64. From there, the Rams turned to their defense as they held the Broncos scoreless on a final three-point attempt that would have sent the game into overtime. With the defensive stand, the Rams claimed their first win of 2018 and ended their skid.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Chowan took 1-2 in the 200 backstroke as Julia Chmielewska touched the wall first at 2:07.49. Kjahna O finished second with a time of 2:08.39.
Ashley Hernandez finished seventh in the event with a time of 2:18.48.
Grace Arrendondo finished seventh overall in the 100 Free with a time of 55.33. SheAyre Bowles finished first in the consolation finals to finish ninth overall with a time of 56.28.
AnnMarie Spiker produced a personal-best time in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:30.06. Spiker finished fifth. Sarah Hull and MacKenzie Lucy finished 10th and 12th respectively.
In the 200 fly, Chowan finished fifth and sixth. Jasmine Gibson touched fifth for the Hawks with a time of 2:24.58. Keitra Lloyd touched at 2:26.89.
In the final event of the championships, Chowan took third in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:38.21. Julia Chmielewska, Grace Arredondo, SheAyre Bowles, and Kjahna O rounded out the competition with a podium finish.

Fayetteville, NC –Whenever Fayetteville State plays Winston-Salem State
in basketball, the definition of rivalry is obvious through the course
of the game.
This evening in Capel Arena, Fayetteville State held a two-point lead
(64-62) with 49 seconds left in front of a packed crowd. The game was
the second CIAA broadcast game for the Broncos.
After five lead changes and four tied scores of the second half, the
Rams William Crandell was fouled on a made layup and converted the
free-throw for one-point lead (65-64) with 36 seconds left.
Willie Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC) drove the lane on the following play
but Stephen Pippins blocked his layup; which in turn, forced the Broncos
to foul with 12 seconds left.
Derrick Farquharson would make both free throws to give Winston-Salem
State a 67-64 lead.
Coming out of a Bronco timeout, all eyes would target Denzell Hosch as
he helped FSU prevail over the Rams in the C.E. Gaines Center before the
final buzzer.
With the ball in play and 10 seconds left, FSU progressed through a
couple options that led to Joshua Smith (Fayetteville, NC).
Smith led the Broncos with a team-high 17 points with 5-of-10 made
three-pointers. Unfortunately, his tenth 3-point attempt failed as time
expired.
The win broke an 11-game losing streak for Winston-Salem State as the
Rams improved to 5-19 overall and 3-11 in the CIAA. WSSU is 1-7 in the
Southern Division.
Fayetteville State is now 3-5 in the division and 4-10 in the
conference.
Willie Gilmore and Joshua Bryant (both of Fayetteville, NC) scored 11
points.
Crandell led the game with 22 points while Farquharson followed with 17
points. Robert Colon scored 11 points coming off the Rams bench.
Winston-Salem State scored 17 points off turnovers compared to the
Broncos 10. WSSU’s highest lead of the game was by seven points (40-33)
with 16:50 left in the second half. Fayetteville State led by 13 points
(15-2) in the first half (12:45).
Fayetteville State has two games remaining before the CIAA Tournament.
The Broncos will travel to Shaw on Wednesday, February 21 and will host
Saint Augustine’s on next Saturday for Senior Day.
With the win, the Rams improve to 5-19 overall and 3-11 in Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The win does not move
the Rams out of sixth place in the CIAA Southern Division as the team
improves to 1-7 in divisional play.
The Rams will return to action, Wednesday, when the team heads to
Charlotte, N.C. to take on the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls. For more

LANDOVER, Md. – North Carolina Central University freshman Gordon Lewis placed in the top-5 in two events during the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, earning nine of his team’s 21.5 points to finish 10th in the team standings.
The NCCU men’s 21.5 points are the most by the Eagles at the MEAC indoor championship event since tallying 24 points in 2013.
Lewis, out of Fredericksburg, Virginia, finished just one spot off the medal podium in fourth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.75 seconds, while placing fifth in the 400m dash with a season-best time of 48.73 seconds.
Lewis also had a part in three team points when he joined Da’Mon Ingram, Deontae Williams and Jazire Notice in the men’s 4x400m relay and finished sixth in 3:18.81.
In the men’s high jump, sophomore Omega Smalls finished fifth with a leap of 2.01 meters (6’ 7.0”) and freshman Marvin Jones tied for seventh with a jump of 1.96m (6’ 5.0”).
In the men’s pole vault, freshman Nicolas Anderson cleared a season-best height of 4.12m (13’ 6.25”) to place fifth.
On the women’s side, NCCU junior Bethany White posted the second-fastest time in the 60m dash preliminaries with a career-best 7.44 seconds. In the 60m finals, however, she flinched at the start and did not finish the race. White battled back in the finals of the 200m dash to place seventh in 25.09 seconds.
Another spotlight for NCCU was the performance of freshman Bhrandi Crenshaw, who placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.67m (5’ 5.75”) and sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.85m (38’ 10.5”) – both are season-best marks.
As a team, the NCCU women placed 11 with nine points.

Demetrius Sanders continued his scoring output with his third straight 25+ point outing with 26 points on 9-15 shooting from the floor. Sanders added six rebounds on the evening.
Gus Rowland tallied 16 points along with 14 from Robert Grubbs and 13 points from Tim Hewett.
The Hawks scored a season-high 55 points in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Both teams traded baskets throughout the opening half as the Hawks led 31-30 at the break.
Tim Hewett opened up the scoring with a jumper. A dunk by Demetrius Sanders and a jumper by Dino Muminovic allowed the Hawks to lead 6-4.
The Bulldogs led by three, 14-11, midway through the half until a layup by Demetrius Sanders and a jumper by Dino Muminovic handed the lead back to Chowan, 15-14.
Bowie State continued to fight for the lead as the score was tied four more times in the opening 20 minutes.
Ugljesa Portic and Gus Rowland converted from the stripe to give the Hawks a 31-30 lead heading into the locker room.
Second Half:
The Hawks went on an 8-1 run to start the second half to take hold of the contest. Tim Hewett hit a jumper before back-to-back threes by Robert Grubbs and Gus Rowland opened up an eight point lead for the Hawks, 39-31.
Chowan would push their advantage to double-figures midway through the half as Demetrius Sanders scored the next six points for the Hawks. Tim Hewett and Robert Grubbs added two points in the swing.
In the middle portion of the half, Chowan maintained a double-figure lead seeing their lead swell to 14, 68-54, after Gus Rowland knocked down a trey with 6:04 remaining.
Down the stretch Bowie State outscored the Hawks 29-18 going 8-11 from the floor and 11-13 from the stripe.
Bowie State chipped away at the deficit closing the gap to one, 75-74, with 2:14 remaining before two freebies by Gus Rowland and jumper by Dino Muminovic pushed the lead back to five, 79-74.
The Bulldogs would keep fighting closing the gap to one on two separate occasions. BSU had a chance to tie the contest at 84-all as the Bulldogs missed the front end of three attempts at the stripe.
Tim Hewett sealed the win with a pair with 1.3 seconds left on the clock. The final attempt by the Bulldogs hit off the back iron.

Chowan will look to run their win streak to four games as the Hawks host Lincoln (Pa.) on Wednesday, February 21. The Hawks will honor Tim Hewett, Trevis Buckhanon, and Dino Muminovic for senior night. The contest is a part of CU's 10th Annual Play4Kay contest. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After getting the first out of the inning, Molloy strung together four straight singles to score two runs in the opening frame.
Chowan looked to crack into the run column in the bottom of the second inning as Robert Williams and Julian Lopez reached on the free pass. Williams and Lopez advanced 90 feet on a passed ball but was stranded in scoring position.
The Hawks broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning as three straight walks loaded the bases. Harley Davidson singled up the middle to score the first run of the contest for the Hawks. Anthony Jefferson drew a two-out walk to load the bases again for the Hawks before Harry Markotay unloaded the bases with a triple to right field to put Chowan up 5-2.

DURHAM, N.C. — Forward Kierona Morton scored six points and grabbed four rebounds to highlight her Senior Day as the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team lost an 80-69 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) home game to University of Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon in McDougald-McLendon Arena.
The Hawks made a season-high 11 three-pointers on the way to their fifth win in their last seven games. Eastern Shore (9-16 Overall, 6-7 MEAC) shot 52.4-percent (11-21) from long range. A trio of Hawks accounted for all of their sharpshooting as junior Keyera Eaton scored a game-high 21 points with four made three-pointers, junior Ciani Byrom canned 18 points with four treys and senior Alexus Hicks chipped in 16 points with a trio of triples.
Sophomore Paulina Afriyie was one rebound shy of a double-double as she paced the Eagles with 16 points and nine rebounds. All 12 Eagles scored for a second straight game with juniors Jayla Calhoun (9 points), Rodneysha Martin (8 points) and Caira Benton (7 points) combining for 24 points. Freshman Kieche White matched Morton with six points and she distributed five assists.
NCCU only held a lead in the first quarter. A three-pointer by Martin and a layup by Benton gave NCCU an early 5-2 edge. Benton made the front end of two free throws to tie the contest for the final time at 10-all before the Hawks scored the final five points of the period.
Eastern Shore drained seven of their 11 trifectas in the second quarter. The hot-handed Hawks raced out to a 45-27 halftime advantage by outscoring the Eagles 30-17 in the period. The visitors advantage grew to as many as 31 late in the third quarter, 69-38, before NCCU dominated play in the fourth quarter to close the final margin of defeat to 11 points.
Afriyie scored 10 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Eagles outscored the Shore, 27-11, over final 10 minutes.
The Hawks dominated the backboards against NCCU (46-37) for a second straight time this season to complete the regular-season series sweep. Freshmna Bairesha Gill-Miles, who only played three minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, paced Eastern Shore with 12 rebounds.
NCCU (6-19, 4-8) next hosts Howard University on Monday at 4 p.m.
Chowan added three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to close the door to lead 8-2. Trent Brosdahl started the inning reaching on an error. A ground out pushed Brosdahl into scoring position before a single to right center by Julian Lopez opened the rally. Four straight hits by the Hawks produced two more runs to take the final tally to 8-2.

First Quarter:
Coker grabbed the momentum early scoring four goals in the opening period. Alex Clabuagh found Nick Lavoyfor the only tally of the period for the Hawks.
Second Quarter:
Chowan dominated the second period outscoring Coker 5-2. Noah Holloway found Austin Lee for the first tally of the period to close the gap to 4-2.
Noah Holloway found the back of the net following a Coker goal to keep the deficit at two, 5-3. The Cobras answered the goal to push the lead back to 6-3 with 3:47 remaining in the half.
Nick Lavoy and Anthony Alfonso brought the Hawks back in the half scoring three goals to tie things at 7-all. LaVoy found Alfonso with 2:20 remaining to start the attack. Alfonso would find the net again with just over a minute to play to trim the deficit to one, 6-5.
As time was winding down, Nick Lavoy ripped a shot from the restraining line and found the back of the net as time expired to send the Hawks to a 6-all half time score.
Third Quarter:
The Cobras kept the lead following a goal early in the period. Nick Lavoy and Anthony Alfonso teamed up once again to tie things at 7-all.
The Hawks would take their first lead of the contest midway through the period as Austin Lee found Alex Clabaugh for a man-up goal to lead 8-7.
Coker scored two times in the remainder of the period to lead 9-8 heading to the final period.
Fourth Quarter:
Xavier Wingfield beat his defender in a 1-v-1 situation to trim the deficit to 10-9 with 9:05 left in regulation.
Coker extended their advantage to three, 12-9, with 4:04 remaining. Anthony Alfonso scored an unassisted goal with 1:14 left before Alfonso found Nick Lavoy for a man-up goal with 43 seconds remaining to close the gap to one, 12-11.
The Cobras won the final face-off and kept the ball away from the Hawks to run out the clock.

Chowan returns to the field on Friday, February 23, as the Hawks travel to Salisbury, N.C. to face Catawba in a non-conference clash. Opening face-off is at 3:30pm.
PIRATES HOLD OFF PESKY BULLDOGS 79-66
HAMPTON, Va. – Malique Trent-Street paced five in double figures with 15 points as Hampton held off a second-half flurry by visiting South Carolina State for a key 79-66 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory on Saturday.
Hampton (14-14/9-4) used an 11-2 run over a 6:38 span to lead 24-12 on a Charles Wilson-Fisher jumper with 8:13 left. That lead stayed in double digits with 4:22 left on a Trevond Barnes dunk and a 28-18 advantage. The Bulldogs cut the deficit in half with a pair of free throws by Donte Wright making the halftime score 33-28.
In the second half, Hampton used a 13-2 flurry over a 4:17 span to lead 53-35 on a pair of Trent-Street free throws with 13:45 left. SCSU did not go away quietly trimming the deficit to 63-58 with 5:10 left on a jumper by Ozante Fields.
Hampton quickly pushed the lead back into double digits as a Trent-Street jumper with 3:19 left to lead 71-59. SCSU cut it to nine on Damani Applewhite free throws at the 1:49 mark for a 72-63 score, but that was as close as they got.
Joining Trent-Street in double figures was Kalin Fisher with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, Lysander Bracey with 13 points, Akim Mitchell with 10 points and six boards, while Jermaine Marrow had 10 points.
Hampton returns to action to face league-leader Savannah State on Monday night at 7 pm.

SECOND QUARTER SURGE LEADS HAMPTON OVER SCSU
HAMPTON, Va. – A 14-1 start of the second quarter helped propel Hampton to a 60-42 win over South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon.
After a sluggish first quarter that saw SCSU score the last four points to make it a 12-9 Hampton lead after one, the Lady Pirates went on a 14-1 run over the first nearly seven minutes of the second to lead 26-12 on a triple by Mahaley Holit with 3:11 left in the half. Ashley Bates hit a layup with 38 seconds left in the half to keep the margin at 14 points, but a pair of Dashanique Peterson free throws with 14 seconds left gave Hampton a 30-18 halftime advantage.
The 12-point halftime margin was as close as SCSU got in the second half. A K’Lynn Willis jumper with 5:49 left gave Hampton its largest lead of the second half at 53-31.
Jephany Brown was the leading scorer with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Monnazjea Finney-Smith added 15 points and seven boards and Bates had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds with four assists and five steals.
Hampton now faces Savannah State on Monday night at 5 pm.

WOMEN FINISH THIRD AT MEAC INDOOR
LANDOVER, Md. – The Hampton University women’s indoor track and field team finished third in the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships held at the Prince George’s County Learning Complex.
On Saturday, 10 Lady Pirates earned All-MEAC honors finishing in the top eight in their events. In the shot put, Corneisha Mitchell took second place with a toss of 46-8.75 while Kiyanna Thomas finished seventh with a 43-0.5 toss.
The mile run saw Hampton take a 3-4-5 finish with Janet Okeago leading the pack in 5:04.70. Eusila Chepkemei took fourth in 5:05.02 and Pollyanna Velasco was fifth in 5:09.60.
Meshala Morton finished third in the 60 meter dash in 7.48, while Autumn Smith took sixth in the 60 hurdles running an 8.60.
Okeago and Chepkemei took second and seventh respectively in the 3000 meters with Okeago running 10:09.80 and Chepkemei a 10:34.49.
The mile relay team consisting of Sashana Hinds, Morton, Smith and Asha Copeland ran 3:49.38 to take fourth.
N.C. A&T State won the meet with 163.5 points, followed by Bethune-Cookman with 104 and Hampton with 96.
Hampton will next compete in the ECAC Championships over the weekend of March 2.

MEN TAKE SECOND AT MEAC INDOOR
LANDOVER, Md. – The Hampton University men’s indoor track and field team finished second this weekend in the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George’s Learning Complex.
N.C. A&T State won the meet with 144 points, followed by Hampton (108) and Bethune-Cookman (97.5) to round out the top three.
Isaac Arriola took second in the triple jump with a leap of 49-1.75, while Trey Clark took fourth in the pole vault with a leap of 14 feet.
Emmanuel Too earned a second in the mile (4:21.66) and fourth in the 3000 (8:55.09) while Stanley Davis took sixth in the mile 4:23.78.
The 400 meters saw Jaelen Williams take third place (48.39) and Justin Beatty finish sixth in 48.82. The 60 hurdles had Charles Graham finish sixth (8.168) and Jaelen Williams take eighth (8.46). Brenan Garrett ran a 6.9 in the 60 meters for a seventh place finish.
The final event was the 4x400 relay as Garrett, Davis, Beatty and Williams combined for a 3:16.89 to take third and hold onto second place.
Hampton will next compete in the IC4A Championships over the weekend of March 2.
