NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 2, 2018—Howard sophomore Sarah Edmond and Morgan State senior Lexus Spears were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. Howard’s Curstyn Moore earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Howard sophomore Jayla Myles was named Defensive Player of the Week.


Edmond (G, 5-9, So., Freeport, N.Y.) averaged 20.0 points and 4.5 assists per game over the past week, going a combined 13-for-23 (.565) from the floor. Against Brown, Edmond dropped a career-high 28 points on 9-for-17 shooting, while also dishing out six assists, grabbing five rebounds and notching three steals. In a win over Campbell, she went 6-for-8 from the floor for 12 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists.

Spears (F/C, 6-2, Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) went 10-for-12 (.833) from the floor in a win over UMass Lowell, scoring a game-high 21 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. Her performance helped Morgan State finish the non-conference slate at 7-6, its first winning non-conference record since the 2008-09 season.

Moore (G/F, 5-10, Fr., Mount Vernon, N.Y.) averaged 11.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, and she scored 13 points to go along with five rebounds against Campbell. She followed that up with a career-high 10 rebounds against Brown – a game in which she was just one point shy of a double-double.


Myles (C, 6-2, So., Rochester, N.Y.) averaged 10.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game this past week. In a win over Campbell, she grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds and blocked four shots – before turning in an eight-rebound, five-block performance against Brown.

Other Top Performers

Lanayjha Ashe (DSU) had 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists against Florida Atlantic.

Ryan Jones (DSU) scored 13 points at Florida before turning in a 12-point, five-rebound, two-assist performance against Florida Atlantic.

Florence Ouattara (FAMU) scored 18 points at Alabama to go along with four assists, four steals and three rebounds.

Adre’onia Coleman (MSU) recorded a double-double against UMass Lowell with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while also blocking three shots.


Alexus Lessears (NCAT) had 13 points and eight rebounds in a loss at Ohio.


Cinia McCray (NCAT) went 8-for-13 from the floor at Ohio, scoring 23 points and grabbing six rebounds.

Khadedra Croker (NSU) had six rebounds and three blocks in a win over Longwood.
 

NORFOLK, Va. - Morgan State's Tiwian Kendley and Norfolk State's Kyle Williams have been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Men's Basketball Players of the Week, the conference announced today. Howard's R.J. Cole was named Rookie of the Week while Morgan State’s Phillip Carr was selected as Defensive Player of the Week.

Kendley had a monster week during Morgan State's West Coast swing as he averaged 30 points and four steals in two games played at Grand Canyon and Cal State Northridge. Kendley also shot 91.3 percent (21-of-23) from the free throw line and 48.6 percent from the field while averaging two assists. Versus Grand Canyon, Kendley scored 31 points with four steals and a blocked shot and followed it up three days later with a 30-point, four-steal performance at Cal State Northridge.

Williams helped Norfolk State close out non-conference play in style as he scored a game-high 21 points en route to a win over Stony Brook. The 6-4 redshirt senior guard saved his best for last as he scored 10 of the final 16 Norfolk State points in the final 3:59 of the second half. Williams finished the contest shooting over 50 percent while also nailing 7-of-8 free throws. He also grabbed four rebounds and blocked one shot.

Cole continued his stronghold on the Rookie of the Week honors as he scored 22 points with five assists at Hawai'i. The freshman finished 7-of-8 from the charity stripe, shot 60 percent from beyond the arc and had a steal.

Carr averaged 11.5 rebounds in two games with one block and a steal. He grabbed 12 boards and had a steal at Grand Canyon while pulling down 11 boards with a blocked shot at Cal State Northridge.

OTHER TOP PERFORMERS

Cedric Council (Coppin State) averaged 14 points in two games which was highlighted by a season-high 17-point performance against Georgia Tech.


Raasean Davis (North Carolina Central) led the Eagles in scoring with 16 points while shooting 80 percent from the field and tallying eight rebounds in the win over St. Andrews.

Marius McAllister (North Carolina Central) finished as the Eagles’ top rebounder (10) and also led in assists (8) in his first career start. He also accounted for a block and a steal versus St. Andrews.

Jordan Perkins (North Carolina Central) scored 11 points as he shot 3-of-4 from three-point range and totaled six assists in the win over St. Andrews.

Steven Whitley (Norfolk State) tied career highs for points and steals in NSU’s win over Stony Brook with 18 points, four steals and seven rebounds.

Desmond Williams (Florida A&M) led the Rattlers in scoring with a 20-point performance and a pair of steals against Ball State.
 

BOWIE, Md. - If your opponent attempts 57 shots and you miss 55 shots, the end result will be a loss and that's exactly what Bowie State men's basketball did on Saturday afternoon, falling in overtime to the Shaw Bears by a final score of 73-64.

The win improved Shaw to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA while the loss dips Bowie State to 6-9 on the year and 1-3 in the league.

Shaw’s DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored a game-high 26 points, including 19 in the second half to lead all scorers. He finished with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals while Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, Pa.) was responsible for a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds.

Shaw shot at a 54.5 percent clip from field in the second half and an overall 45.6 percent for the game, which including a blistering 75 percent (6-of-8) in overtime.

On the flip side, Bowie State shot a frigid 26.7 percent in second half (8-of-30) and a season-low 28.6 percent (22-of-77) for the contest.

The Bears led for over two minutes early on, but Bowie State tied the game at 7-7 on a jumper from freshman Justin Route (Washington, D.C.) at the 14:56 mark. The Bulldogs would control the rest of the half after using a 12-0 run to lead 27-15 over Shaw with 4:35 left. The Bears cut the deficit to single digits after producing a 9-2 scoring margin, but the Bulldogs held a 5-2 spread, including a layup at the buzzer from freshman Jacob Long (Washington, D.C.) to send the Bulldogs into halftime with a 35-27 advantage.

Shaw fought back to start the second half with a 13-5 run to tie the game 40-all at the 15:12 mark but after four lead changes and the game knotted at 55-55 with 4:39 remaining, the Bears used a mini 4-1 run to push in front at 59-56 as the clock displayed 34 seconds left in regulation. However, the Bulldogs did not flinch as senior Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 59-59, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, the Bears scored eight unanswered points, taking a 67-59 lead as the Bulldogs had no answer for Shaw defensively, forcing the Bulldogs to call a timeout with 2:37 left to play. Bowie State senior Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) hit a 3-pointer at 1:36 to pull within five but the Bears outscored the home team 6-2 down the stretch, including back-to-back dunks to close out the game.

Hayes led Bowie State in scoring with 13 points while sophomore Saiquan Jamison notched his fifth double-double of the season, recording 16 rebounds and 10 points. Freshman Keith Duffin, Jr. (Fort Meade, Md.) chipped in nine points and the Bulldogs trio of Wells, Long and Route tallied eight points each.

Bulldogs’ men’s basketball will have little time to rest before returning to the hardwood on Monday (January 8th), hosting Fayetteville State University at 7:30 p.m. in the A.C. Jordan Arena.

MURFREESBORO, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (4-10, 2-3 CIAA) ran out of gas when the team took an 82-65 loss at Chowan (5-7, 1-3 CIAA), Saturday evening. Playing in their second came in 24 hours, the Rams struggled to find their offense in tough loss.

The Rams found points hard to come by in the game. As a team, the Rams were held to 65 total points and shot just 36.1% (22-of-61) from the floor while the Hawks shot 45.6% (26-of-57) from the floor. WSSU sophomore guard Robert Colon led the way for the Rams with a team-high 16 points. Junior guard Derrick Brewer, Jr. added 11 points as well. The Rams were especially outmatched in the rebounding column as Chowan totaled 41 rebounds to the Rams’ 30. Junior forward Chigozie Ngene-Igwe led the Rams’ rebounding effort with five in the game.


Things looked good early for the Rams, but some offensive struggles came to hinder the team late in the first half. The Rams opened the game with a solid effort after a Brewer, Jr. three-pointer left the team on top, 13-12 with 12:59 left in the half. The Rams pushed their lead to as many as five points, 17-12 after an Ngene-Igwe lay-up midway through the half. The Rams would hold on to their lead, but the feisty Hawks tied the game, 28-28 in the final four minutes of the half. It was then that the Rams would begin their struggles as the team didn’t record a field goal for the remainder of the half and took a 35-29 deficit into the locker room at halftime.


The second half saw the Rams’ struggles continue as the team kept up the fight, but they could not put the points they needed on the scoreboard. The half started with some solid defensive efforts by both teams. Neither team scored for the first three minutes before sophomore guard Julius Barnes hit a three-pointer with 16:49 left to play and pulled the Rams to within three points, 35-32. However, the three-point cushion was as close as the Rams would get as the team fell behind the Hawks by as many as 20 points, 82-62 in the final minute of the game. The Rams would keep chipping away, but in the end, the Rams took the 85-65 loss.


With the loss, the Rams fall to 4-10 overall and 2-3 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The Rams will return to action, Monday when the team heads to Elizabeth City, N.C. to take on the Elizabeth City State Vikings. MURFREESBORO, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (6-8, 1-3 CIAA) bounced back in a big way to take a 101-96 overtime road win over the Chowan Lady Hawks (11-3, 3-1 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The Rams took the win behind a pair of dominating performances from senior center Kandace Tate and junior forward Brionna Pate as the two combined to score 66 of the Rams points in the win.


The Rams put on their second offensive explosion in a week to claim the victory. After scoring 103 points in a home win over West Virginia State last Sunday, the Rams broke the century mark again with 101 points, Saturday. As a team, the Rams shot 50.7% (36-of-71) from the floor while holding the Lady Hawks to shooting just 41.4% (36-of-87) from the floor. It was Pate that led the way for the Rams with 35 points with 13 rebounds in the game while Tate added 31 points as well. Senior guard Tiana Edwards added 15 points in the game.


The game was a dramatic one with a thrilling first and second half efforts from both teams. The Rams took control of the game early with an 8-0 run that was capped by an Edwards three-pointer with 7:41 left in the quarter. Though Chowan would attempt to cut into the Rams’ lead, the Rams held on to take a 19-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Rams pushed their lead to as many as 10 points, 23-13, after a pair of Pate free throws with 8:52 left in the half. Chowan would work to cut the WSSU lead down to just two points, 34-32 with 3:24 left to play, but the Rams would never relent as they took their 42-40 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The drama would continue in the second quarter. The Rams started the half on the right note as they pushed their lead to double-digits once again after a Pate jumper at the 5:49 mark gave the team a 55-44 lead. The WSSU lead would not hold up, however, as Chowan erased the lead and even left the Rams trailing, 60-62 with 1:22 left in the quarter. The Rams would answer in a big way with four straight points, including a pair of free throws from freshman guard Nyona Shields and a jumper from Tate that ended the quarter with the Rams on top, 64-60. The effort would set the stage for a dramatic fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was a see saw battle with both teams claiming leads throughout the period. After going ahead by as many as five points, 69-64 after a Pate three-pointer with 8:38 left to play, the Rams eventually found themselves trailing, 73-72 with 6:40 left in the quarter. In the final minutes, the lead swung from side to side with the Rams falling behind by as many as four points. However, Pate would hit a jumper with 00:08 left to play to tie the game, 88-88 before a Chowan missed jumper at the buzzer sent the game into overtime.

The Rams dominated the overtime period, outscoring the Lady Hawks, 13-8 to claim the win. After falling behind 89-90 with 3:52 left to play, the Rams went on an 8-3 run that was capped by a pair of Tate free throws to go ahead 97-93. From there, the Rams clamped down on defense and never allowed the Lady Hawks to regain the lead and sealed the 101-96 win.

The 101 points marked the second time in a week that the Rams scored at least 100 points in a week. Prior to last Sunday, the team hadn’t scored 100 points since the 2012 season.


With the win, the Ram improve to 5-7 overall and 6-8 overall and 1-3 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The Rams will return to action, Monday evening when the team closes out its three-game road trip with a 5:30 p.m. game at Elizabeth City State. BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State Bulldogs women’s basketball rolled by visiting Shaw University on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Lady Bears 73-49. The win improves the Bulldogs’ record to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in league play.

Leading the Bulldogs offensively was senior Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) with a personal season-best 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field to go along with four rebounds and a game-high five assists. Fellow senior Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) contributed 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Senior Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) came off the bench to add 10 points. Sophomore Dynaisha Christian (Pocomoke, Md.) tied her career-high in rebounds with eight and added five points.

The Bulldogs carried a 30-21 lead into intermission and made 11-of-30 first half field goals (36.7 percent), which included 31.3 percent (5-of-15) beyond the arc. Shaw managed just 6-of-22 (percent) shooting over the first 20 minutes.

With a two-point advantage before tip-off, courtesy of an administrative technical foul on Bowie State, the Lady Bears lead was short lived as BSU’s Proctor drained a 3-pointer. Shaw’s Johnson-Tyler shifted the lead back over to the Lady Bears at 4-3. The lead would change hands two more times over the next two minutes before a Colston triple tied the contest at 8-all at the 4:52 mark. The Bulldogs closed the opening quarter with a 7-1 run to take a 15-9 lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the afternoon.

A 3-pointer from the Lady Bears’ Raquel Kellow (Conroe, Texas) pulled Shaw within three to start the second quarter but BSU started to pull away from Shaw led by a 13-5 scoring margin with 2:35 remaining in the first half. The Lady Bears would outscore the Bulldogs 4-2 in the last 2:15 to fall behind 30-21 at halftime.

Bowie State outscored Shaw in all four quarters, including a 22-12 third quarter domination that pulled the Bulldogs away from Shaw heading into the fourth.

The final quarter featured much of the same for the Lady Bears as the Bulldogs scored nine points off six Shaw turnovers. The Lady Bears would not get any closer than 17 points (64-47) for the remainder of the contest.

Shaw’s offensive struggle resulted in the Lady Bears shooting 36 percent from the floor (18-of-50), 12.5 percent from long distance (1-of-8) and just 63.2 percent from the charity stripe (12-of-19).

Shaw (3-12 / 1-3 CIAA) was led by Lervencia Johnson-Tyler’s (Many, La.) double-double of 21 points and 10 points while Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, Calif.) tallied 11 points in the loss.

The Bulldogs will entertain the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State in its next conference matchup on Monday (January 8th) with game time set for 5:30 p.m.
