Coaches vs. Cancer initiative will cross all of the Hawks’ teams.

CONTACT: G. STAN BRADLEY

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—The American Cancer Society of the Eastern Shore, headquartered in Salisbury, Md. is partnering with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for the 2017-2018 athletic year. The two organizations will be driving a Coaches vs. Cancer awareness campaign on the 25th anniversary of the movement.

Championed by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), the organization partnered with the American Cancer Society to unite basketball coaches and fans throughout the program to defeat a common enemy — cancer.

Founded by Norm Stewart, the former University of Missouri head men’s basketball coach in 1993, Stewart asked fans to pledge one dollar for every 3-point shot his team made during their season, to be donated to the fight against cancer. Twenty-five years later, the program has raised more than $110 million to the fight against cancer.

Being true to Coach Stewart’s idea, the Hawks will ask that fans pledge for every 3-pointer the Hawks make from Feb. 1-March 4, 2018 . Whether it is at the end of each game, or at the end of the season, fans can total up the shots from the men’s and women’s teams and donate accordingly. Beginning January 8, 2018, fans can go to http://www.3pointchallenge.org, find Maryland Eastern Shore and make their contributions there. Any fan who makes a donation of $100.00 or more (at once or through the challenge) will receive a t-shirt from Coaches vs. Cancer.

However, Maryland Eastern Shore is going beyond basketball and promoting the initiative across all its sports at the urging of Ashley Webb, the Community Development Manager on the Eastern Shore.

“We have always been advocates of the fight against cancer,” said Director of Athletics Keith Davidson. “Whether it be Relay for Life events, Coaches vs. Cancer in men’s basketball, Dig Pink with women’s volleyball, Think Pink nights with women’s basketball, or Save Second Base Games with baseball and softball, our department has always supported the fight against this horrible disease.”

This year, at each home game, Hawk Athletics is promoting the fight against cancer. Through public address announcements, informational tables, donation collection, and themed events, the Hawks hope to raise awareness and help support the Coaches vs. Cancer initiative and the American Cancer Society.

The drive informally kicked off with volleyball and basketball on Oct. 20, at Hawk Hysteria when students and fans signed pledge cards in honor of their loved ones affected by the disease. The Wall of Hope is still on display in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center and will continue to grow this season.

Other events include two games during Suits and Sneakers week, when the coaches will wear their Nike sneakers with their suits when they face North Carolina Central on Jan. 22 and again vs. Howard on Jan. 27.

On Feb. 5, when the Hawks take on Florida A&M, it will be Play4Kay night. With the teams in pink, The Shore will use that particular night to promote the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and help drive funds to that worthy cause. Fans can support the Hawks at: https://support.kayyow.com/EasternShoreHawks

Other cancer awareness events at other Hawk athletic contests will be announced soon.

“We have all been affected by [cancer]” said Davidson. “Whether it is family or friends, we all know someone who has had their life changed by cancer and not in a good way. Even here in the athletic department, our staff and coaches have been affected themselves so this campaign is near and dear to us.”

The Bulldogs would control the rest of the half after using a 12-0 run to lead 27-15 over Shaw with 4:35 left. Leading the Bulldogs offensively was senior Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) with a personal season-best 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field to go along with four rebounds and a game-high five assists. Fellow senior Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) contributed 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Senior Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) came off the bench to add 10 points. Sophomore Dynaisha Christian (Pocomoke, Md.) tied her career-high in rebounds with eight and added five points.

The Bulldogs carried a 30-21 lead into intermission and made 11-of-30 first half field goals (36.7 percent), which included 31.3 percent (5-of-15) beyond the arc. Shaw managed just 6-of-22 (percent) shooting over the first 20 minutes.

With a two-point advantage before tip-off, courtesy of an administrative technical foul on Bowie State, the Lady Bears lead was short lived as BSU’s Proctor drained a 3-pointer. Shaw’s Johnson-Tyler shifted the lead back over to the Lady Bears at 4-3. The lead would change hands two more times over the next two minutes before a Colston triple tied the contest at 8-all at the 4:52 mark. The Bulldogs closed the opening quarter with a 7-1 run to take a 15-9 lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the afternoon.

A 3-pointer from the Lady Bears’ Raquel Kellow (Conroe, Texas) pulled Shaw within three to start the second quarter but BSU started to pull away from Shaw led by a 13-5 scoring margin with 2:35 remaining in the first half. The Lady Bears would outscore the Bulldogs 4-2 in the last 2:15 to fall behind 30-21 at halftime.

Bowie State outscored Shaw in all four quarters, including a 22-12 third quarter domination that pulled the Bulldogs away from Shaw heading into the fourth.

The final quarter featured much of the same for the Lady Bears as the Bulldogs scored nine points off six Shaw turnovers. The Lady Bears would not get any closer than 17 points (64-47) for the remainder of the contest.

Shaw’s offensive struggle resulted in the Lady Bears shooting 36 percent from the floor (18-of-50), 12.5 percent from long distance (1-of-8) and just 63.2 percent from the charity stripe (12-of-19).

Shaw (3-12 / 1-3 CIAA) was led by Lervencia Johnson-Tyler’s (Many, La.) double-double of 21 points and 10 points while Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, Calif.) tallied 11 points in the loss.

The Bulldogs will entertain the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State in its next conference matchup on Monday (January 8th) with game time set for 5:30 p.m.
