on West Florida on Saturday.

HAWKS PROFILE
Chowan enters the contest winless on the season with a 0-2 record after
losing to Delta State last weekend, 42-13. One of the biggest questions
entering the season was, who the starting quarterback will be? Chowan
has found that in freshman Bryce
Witt. Witt has tallied 576 yards through the air and
connected on five touchdowns. The freshman has completed 63.8% of his
passes so far this season.
Bryce Witt was named CIAA Quarterback of the Week and CIAA
Rookie of the Week for his efforts against DSU. Witt threw for a
career-high 319 yards.
The Hawks defense, led by senior Nate
Wyche and company, has stymied opposing offenses through the
air allowing only one passing touchdown.
ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS
West Florida is coming off a "bye" week as their home opener was
canceled due to Hurricane Irma. The Argonauts are 1-0 on the season
picking up the win in week one against Missouri S&T. West Florida
finished their inaugural season 5-6 and picked up their first-ever win
over a nationally ranked team, #16 Florida Tech.
The Argos defeated Missouri S&T 20-16 behind starting quarterback Mike
Beaudry throwing for 192 yards and two scores. UWF rushed for 41 yards.
LAST MEETING
Chowan picked up the win in the only meeting between the two programs
last season 35-28. The Hawks and Argos met this time last season at
Garrison Stadium.
The Hawks led 28-14 at the halftime whistle but found themselves in a
battle as the Argos scored twice early in the third quarter. Chowan
took the lead with 10:50 remaining in the fourth quarter and never
relinquished the lead.
Charlotte, N.C. (Sept. 15, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University football team will play in the first road game of the season, traveling to NCAA FCS opponent South Carolina State on Saturday, Sept. 16. Kickoff from Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg, S.C. is set for 2:00 p.m.
JCSU fell to 0-2 on the season after suffering a 44-6 home loss to Virginia State last week. Against the Trojans, the JCSU rushing attack struggled, with the Golden Bulls only amassing 91 yards on the ground. Of those yards, junior quarterback Terrance Ervin (Richmond, Va.) accounted for 40 while sophomore teammate Braxton Gambrell (Seneca, S.C.) had 37 on the ground.
Ervin had a decent day in in the air as he connected on 11-of-25 pass attempts for 103 yards and a touchdown. JCSU’s receiving corps got a 40-yard touchdown reception by Denorris Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) while Eugene Holmes (Columbia, S.C.) had two catches for 19 yards.
Defensively, JCSU’s Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.) had 16 tackles, nine solo and registered two tackles for loss. Linebacker Marcel Toran (Washington, D.C.) had eight tackles with 1.5 for loss. Cornerback Daryl Napper (Winston-Salem, N.C.) also had a good outing, combining for six tackles, one interception and one breakup.
South Carolina State enters the game at 0-1 after a 14-8 road loss to Southern University on Sept. 3. Last week’s game against Charleston Southern was canceled due to the threat of Hurricane Irma.
Against Southern, SCSU quarterback Dewann Ford threw for 187 yards on an 18-of-31 outing with one interception. Trey Samuel led the Bulldogs on the ground with 61 yards on 10 carries. Tra’Quan Dubose was the leader of the SCSU receiving corps with four catches for 70 yards. Teammate Quan Caldwell also had four catches for 65 yards while De’Montez Burroughs had five catches for 35 yards.
SCSU was kept out of the endzone, as kicker Tyler Scandrett connected on field goals of 37 and 35 yards, respectively. The SCSU defense also forced a safety to round out the Bulldog scoring.
The game will be broadcast on WGNC AM/FM 1450/101.1 with Dave Friedman on the call.

• Week three of MEAC football action kicks off this week with a total of 10 non-conference games. All teams will be in action with the exception of North Carolina Central as the Eagles will have a bye weekend. • Three MEAC teams are playing FBS opponents this week as Morgan State travels to Rutgers, North Carolina A&T State heads to Charlotte while Bethune-Cookman plays Florida Atlantic. • Rutgers contest against Morgan State marks the 12th consecutive year the Scarlet Knights will face a team from the MEAC. Rutgers and Morgan State have not met since a 38-0 Rutgers win in 2008. • Howard’s win over UNLV on Sept. 2 marked the second straight year the conference has earned an FBS win. Last year’s North Carolina A&T State’s win over Kent State on Sept. 10, 2016 was the Aggies’ first FBS win in school history and the first MEAC FBS win since Bethune-Cookman defeated C-USA’s Florida International 14-12 in 2014. • North Carolina A&T State has put forth an impressive resume to open the season as the Aggies have outscored their opponents 101-3. The Aggies have played both an FCS team and a Division II team with a FBS team on tap this weekend. • Starting next Thursday, Sept. 21, conference play resumes for the remainder of the season as the first ESPN Thursday night contest of the season occurs with South Carolina State traveling to North Carolina Central. • The MEAC is coming off a successful 2016 campaign as the league produced a pair of postseason participants in North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central. NCAT earned an at-large bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs while NCCU was crowned league champion and participated in the second annual Celebration Bowl. • Hurricane Irma has been a thorn in the side of several MEAC programs over the past week as Savannah State, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M and South Carolina State were affected heavily. As of Tuesday, Sept. 12 Savannah State had not arrived back to campus from its trip to Appalachian State in addition to Bethune-Cookman as they’ve remained in Louisiana over the past few days. Florida A&M closed its campus last week while South Carolina State had its game versus Charleston Southern canceled last weekend. All teams are scheduled to return to the gridiron this weekend. • North Carolina Central was picked to defend its MEAC Football Championship as the Eagles topped the league’s annual preseason poll. The Eagles have won three consecutive MEAC Championships as the 2016 title was their first outright title since returning to the MEAC. • Howard University running back Anthony Philyaw was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while South Carolina State linebacker Darius Leonard was selected as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. A 2016 All-MEAC First teamer, Philyaw was the MEAC’s second-leading rusher last fall with 1,230 yards and nine touchdowns on 222 attempts. Leonard continues South Carolina State’s strong tradition of defensive play as last season’s MEAC Defensive Player of the year honor marked the fourth consecutive season a SC State defender has earned the postseason award. • The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced a partnership with the MEAC to reveal the league’s offensive and defensive players of the year as part of the festivities surrounding the 60th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Dec. 5 at the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City. This marks the second consecutive year the players will be honored in New York. • At stake once again for the MEAC Champion is a postseason berth to the 3rd annual Celebration Bowl in Atlanta, Ga. on Dec. 16 at the brand new Mercedes Benz Stadium. BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie State University football team will head south
for the second consecutive week, making a business trip to Saint
Augustine’s University for its final non-conference contest before
beginning CIAA play. Saturday’s (9/16) kickoff between the Bulldogs and
Falcons is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the George Williams Complex on the

Saturday marks just the 5th overall meeting between the Bulldogs and
Falcons on the gridiron. Saint Augustine’s, a member of the Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (Southern Division), dropped a
44-14 road decision at Carson-Newman last Saturday. Bowie State rolled
past Winston-Salem State last Saturday, defeating the Rams 31-13 on
ESPN3.

Chowan remains unbeaten on the early season with a 2-0-1 record. The
Hawks picked up their first ever Conference Carolinas win with a 5-0
victory against Emmanuel last weekend. Carolina Lucci netted two goals
in the win on her way to being named Conference Carolinas Player of the
Week.
Netminder, Olivia Borer, along with the back-line defense for the Hawks
have not allowed a goal this season in over 400 minutes of action.
ERSKINE EXCERPT
The Flying Fleet come into the contest with a 1-3-0 overall record and
are 1-1-0 in league play. Erskine is coming off their first win of the
season defeating Emmanuel 2-1 on the road on Wednesday.
Hayden Banks leads the Fleet with two goals on the season. Erskine was
preseason ninth in the league, one spot ahead of Chowan.
SERIES HISTORY
Chowan and Erskine are meeting for the first time in program history and
first time making the trip to Due West, S.C.

Chowan enters the contest with a 2-1-1 overall record and 0-0-1 league
record. The Hawks are coming off a 2-0 non-conference win against
Shippensburg during the week.
Elliot Chadderton and the back-line have posted clean sheets in the past

Erskine comes into the contest with a 2-3-0 overall record and 1-1-0 in
league play. The Flying Fleet are coming off a 2-0 loss to Emmanuel in a
midweek league contest.
Tim Boeckstaens leads the Fleet with two goals. Erskine was preseason
picked third in the Conference Carolinas poll in front of the fourth
place Hawks.
SERIES HISTORY
Chowan and Erskine will meet for the first time on the pitch. The
contest will be valuable moving throughout the season in the standings.

MURFREESBORO, N.C.- The Chowan Volleyball team opens CIAA league play on this weekend at the CIAA Round-Up in Winston-Salem, N.C. hosted by Winston-Salem State.
The Hawks will face St. Augustine's and Winston-Salem State on Saturday at 12pm and 6pm respectively. Chowan will wrap up play in a must-see match as the Hawks will take on defending CIAA Champion and preseason number one, Shaw, at 11am on Sunday.

St. Augustine's opens the season at the CIAA Round-Up. The Falcons ended their 2016 season with a 9-14 overall record. Chowan defeated the Falcons 3-0 in St. Augustine's final match of the season at the CIAA Championships.

Winston-Salem State comes into the Round-Up with a 3-3 overall record and has won three of their last four matches.

Team will host eight matches over two days
PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — Maryland Eastern Shore opens their 2017 home schedule this weekend with The Henson’s Hawk Invitational. This two day event features four matches each day and five teams participating, including the host Hawks.
The Shore will play at noon and 6 p.m. each day, squaring off against each tournament participation once. Coppin State kicks it off with the Hawks at noon Friday followed by Delaware State that evening. Saturday will see UNC Asheville and Campbell challenge the Hawks.
In addition to the matches the Hawks will play, each team will play two matches against tournament participations. Neutral matches take place at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. each day.

Following the conclusion of Saturday evening’s match there will be an awards ceremony for the tournament champions and All-Tournament team.
