MJBL concludes national baseball championships, Charlotte, Greensboro and Illinois win titles Larry Barber Greensboro, NC – The Metropolitan Junior Baseball League (MJBL) concluded its 27th annual Inner City Classic national baseball championships Tuesday in Greensboro’s War Memorial Stadium. In the 16 and under age group, the Chicago, IL Panthers blanked Next Level Smoke (Charlotte) 15-0 and the Greensboro Red Sox beat the Chester (PA) Diamondbacks 4-1 in the 19 and under division. Chicago scored six runs in the first inning and eight in the third to blow the game open. Ryan Tyler hit a two-run double in the first to power the Panthers. Karlton Carpenter, Vontrell Banks, Mark Zavala and Ceddic Richardson added singles. “We played good defense, had timely hitting and brought a lot of arms to win this title,” said head coach Brandon Kelly. “Vontrell did the job today, but we brought ten pitchers to the tournament.” The Charlotte coach, Sly Fleming, said his problem was just the opposite. “We only had one available pitcher, but we played with heart, we are on our way up, and had an outstanding tournament to reach the finals,” said Fleming. In the 19 and under, Greensboro pitcher Jaylen Guy struck out four while allowing the one run. To secure the win, centerfielder Quez Holden singled and scored and Justin Torres doubled and scored during the two-run fifth. “It’s been a long week but we won this tournament with good situational hitting and base running and our pictures did great by keeping our opponents off the bases,” said head coach Torrey Pettiford. In the 14 and under championship game, played late Monday, the Carolina (Charlotte) Tigers defeated the Baltimore Rattlers 17-4. As reported earlier, the 12 and under title went to The Charlotte Red Sox with a 13-0 win over the Greensboro A’s. While open to everyone, MJBL continues to be the only national youth league geared toward inner city African-American athletes. 2017 MJBL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS- GREENSBORO, NC 19 and under Greensboro Red Sox 4, Chester, PA 1 |
Charlotte Red Sox win MJBL 12-under championship, Tournament play continues for three other divisions Larry Barber July 17, 2017, Monday Greensboro, NC- The Metropolitan Junior Baseball League (MJBL) continued tournament play Monday in host city Greensboro and did crown one national champion. In the age group 12 and under, the Charlotte-based Red Sox Prime defeated the hometown Greensboro Athletics 13-0 at Barber Park. Winning pitcher Nickell Hall threw three shutout innings allowing two hits and striking out four batters. The Red Sox exploded for six runs in the first inning and ran across five in the third. The offensive stars during the event were Justin Best, Jonathan Douglas, Tre Johnson and Charles McDowell, who homered in the championship. “I knew we had a lot of speed on this team and good defense, so we just used those to our advantage,” said head coach Torrey Pettiford. “We wanted to run the bases well and keep the A’s off and I think we did that.” The A’s, are coached by Tyrone Harshaw and Victor Wooten, and Harshaw lamented that his team was just a bit shorthanded for the final. This is the 27th Annual Inner City Classic and will conclude Tuesday. While open to everyone, MJBL continues to be the only national youth league geared toward inner city African-American athletes.
