MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan Men's Soccer team enters their first season as associate members of the Conference Carolinas for the 2017 season. The Conference Carolinas released the 2017 Men's Soccer Preseason poll on Wednesday with the Hawks predicted to finish fourth overall.

The Hawks sit in fourth behind defending league champion Limestone, Southern Wesleyan, and Erskine. Mount Olive and King are tied for fifth, while Lees-McRae, Belmont Abbey, Barton, and North Greenville round out the poll.
4. Chowan University: The Hawks enter their first year as associate members in Conference Carolinas with style, nabbing 57 points and one first-place vote. Chowan posted a 9-6-2 record in 2016.

While they are new to the conference, Lee Wattam and Terell Williamson should be fun to watch on offense this season. Williamson posted 25 points (12g, 1a) and Wattam 22 points (9g, 4a) in 2016, which could land them on an all-conference team if they can duplicate those numbers in 2017.

Players to Watch:
•Jamie McNicholas (Jr.) - Defender
•Lee Wattam (Jr.) - Forward
•Terell Williamson (Sr.) - Forward
The Hawks open the season on the road against Lander on August 31 before opening the home slate against defending national champions Wingate on September 6.

Hawk Bowling welcomes Jennifer King as Assistant Coach
Coach Bandy’s college teammate joins staff
SHAWN YONKER
PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the appointment of Jennifer King to the position of assistant bowling coach. She will join her former college teammate — head coach Kayla Bandy — in the Hawks’ attempt to achieve their title winning aspirations during the 2017-18 season.

“Jennifer is a perfect fit for our program,” Bandy said. “She and I work together extremely well on the lanes and have the same vision for the program here at Maryland Eastern Shore. This past summer Jennifer, her husband, myself, along with a few of our mutual friends, were discussing the sport of bowling – college bowling, professional bowling, and so on. Little did we know that a couple of months later she would ultimately agree to join our program.”

"I'm excited to become a member of the Hawk family and use my past experiences to assist in progressing the games of our Lady Hawks both on and off the lanes,” King said.

King’s bowling expertise is rooted in her time at the University of Pikeville in Kentucky, where she and Bandy were teammates under the direction of Coach Ron Damron. The Bears won the 2008 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship, and individually King won the USBC Singles title that same year. King also earned the Most Valuable Player award from the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association (NCBCA) in 2010 – along with a spot on the First Team – and a Second-Team acknowledgement in 2008. She possessed an average score of 202.072 during her career, which ranks third best in Bears history. Her differential — the difference between a bowler’s score versus a tournament average — is tops.

These accomplishments earned her an induction to the Pikeville Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016 as an individual, after she was inducted in 2014 as a member of the 2008 championship team.

However, her bowling career did not start nor end at Pikeville. In fact, the list is quite extensive, beginning with her participation on Team USA in 2003 and Junior Team USA in 2006 and 2007. She also bowled for another prominent collegiate institution — Wichita State — helping the Shockers to a title in 2006. That same year, she won the Junior Gold National Amateur Championship.

King has continued to bowl post-graduation, and both she and Bandy have continued to collaborate as teammates.

“Most recently, Jennifer (the 2017 USBC Women's Open Championship All-Events Champion) and I, along with two fellow bowlers won the Team Event of the 2017 USBC Women's Open Championship in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a memory that will not soon be forgotten.” Bandy said.

Prior to her time on The Shore, King worked for the Aflac Insurance Group in her home state of South Carolina. This new position represents a career change to coach a sport she has thrived in, but the tools she acquired as an account manager and operations analyst for Aflac will be vital in her success as a coach for the Hawks.

“Jennifer has been in a corporate position for many years since graduating from Pikeville, yet always knew she should be working in the bowling industry in some capacity.” Bandy said. “She has an impressive bowling resume; however, she has also developed an impressive professional resume outside of bowling.

“As we look to create more community involvement in our Roll with the Hawks program, she will bring a great deal of insight into connecting with corporate America and growing the Roll with the Hawks program even further. Jennifer, most importantly, will assist in providing the best student athlete experience for our bowlers. I look forward to working with her as we continue to develop together from ‘Excellence to Eminence,’ as (University President) Doctor (Juliette) Bell would say.”

Maryland Eastern Shore’s bowling team reaffirmed its position as a major player on the collegiate circuit a year ago, winning a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title and earning trips to both the NCAA and USBC Championships. The 2017-18 campaign will begin this fall with the McKendree Brunswick Bearcat Open Oct. 27-29.

Former assistant, Shore native Brian Hollamon hired to helm baseball program
Goens replaced by Parkside High School skipper    SHAWN YONKER
PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday (August 21), appointed alumnus, one-time Hawks assistant and long-time Parkside High School coach Brian Hollamon to be its head baseball coach following the termination of former coach Charlie Goens.

“We feel strongly that this is a move that will take our team in the right direction to both compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and to have a strong and reliable recruiting footprint on Delmarva and throughout the region,” Davidson said. “Brian is someone who puts his all into everything that he does and he has always shown a genuine desire to see this program be successful.”

Hollamon was a graduate assistant with the Hawks from 1996-99 when he earned a Masters of Education in Guidance and Counseling from the university.

“I am very excited for the opportunity,” Hollamon said of his return to the Maroon and Gray. “When I coached here, I enjoyed my time and I’m looking forward to getting back to what we were building. From the moment I had to tell the players in 1999 that I wouldn’t be returning, I have had a desire to one day come back.

“I’m glad to not only be back at the university, but also excited to be with some quality players who make up the current roster.”

Over the last 14 seasons at Parkside, where he was also a guidance counselor, Hollamon has built a perennial power in the Bayside Conference, while consistently producing players who go on to play baseball at all levels including Division I.

Former Ram Hunter Parsons will be a junior on the University of Maryland pitching staff next season, while left handed pitcher Grant Burleson and fellow lefty Sean Fisher will be freshmen at College Park. Matt Smith, a 2016 graduate of Parkside will be entering his sophomore season at Towson University.

He has coached a number of players who went on to be Hawks including Zach Townsend, Dylan Bell, Cody Cauffman and Jamar Cadejuste.

“Our team at Parkside High School was always first and foremost about the kids: Watching them grow, watching them develop and watching them move on and do bigger and better things,” Hollamon said. “Now the opportunity for me is to continue that growth and watch these young men develop and go on to whatever they want to do after the graduate from college. Our goal is going to be to not only give them an opportunity to play baseball, but also get their education and be successful human beings.”

Hollamon led the Rams to 14 straight winning seasons from 2003-2017. Parkside won three Bayside South Titles, one Bayside crown, two Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 2A East Region Sectional Championships, four Maryland 2A East Regional Championships, and most notably made two MPSSAA 2A State Finalist Appearances (2009, 2014)

“My time away from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore has changed me as a coach,” Hollamon said. “I had the experience of 18 years at the high school level. That makes you learn and grow and understand what players need and what they want including what they want from the college level. I had the experience of knowing and developing those kids and getting them ready for college and now that is what I’ll be looking for from the high school coaches who I will have relationships with in recruiting.”

He was named Bayside South Coach of the Year three times (2006, 2008, 2011) and District 8 coach of the Year twice (2009, 2014). In 2015, he coached in the prestigious Brooks Robinson High School All-Star Game and that same year he was recognized by the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches as the Amateur Coach of the Year for his work in high school and American Legion Baseball.

“I think the quality of baseball on the Eastern Shore is pretty solid,” Hollamon said. “Obviously we don’t have the number of players in a small area you would find in a more highly populated area, but within just the state of Maryland you have some really good baseball players and you can put a good product on the field, not to mention Virginia, Delaware and the players that are available throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region that may want to come to Maryland Eastern Shore and play baseball.”

The graduate of Sussex Central High School in Georgetown, Delaware, played four years of baseball at Division III Salisbury University where he was team captain from 1992-1995 and earned a bachelor’s in Marketing and Management. He was named team MVP and earned All-Conference honors at shortstop.

Following his stint with the Hawks, Hollamon moved on to become the head coach at Mardela High School from 1999-2003.

Hollamon also coached with American Legion Post 64 in Salisbury as an assistant before taking over the team in 2015, and played 22 seasons for the Semi-Pro Perdue Chicks of the Eastern Shore Baseball League.

Hollamon lives in Delmar, Delaware with his wife Jodi and daughters Josie and Jordyn.

Goens spent one season with The Shore where the team went 12-40 and lost its first two games as the host team in the MEAC Baseball Tournament, played at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

“We thank Charlie for his work with the program, but it became clear to us during the season that we needed someone at the helm that is invested in this institution, in baseball in the region, in our student athletes and in the Eastern Shore community at large,” Davidson said. “We feel that Brian gives us exactly that along with the stability to lead the program into the future.”

Goens came to the Hawks from Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia. He replaced John O’Neil who won 30 games in two years as acting head coach from 2014-2016.

O’Neil stayed on as an associate head coach for the 2016-17 season, but will not return to the program.

Hollamon will put his own coaching staff in place in the coming weeks

KSU Cross Country and Track & Field
In cross country and track, the Thorobreds picked up sophomore transfer Cameron Galloway from Lindsey Wilson College. Galloway will compete in several events including the 800 meter and 1500 meter. The Paducah, Kentucky native recorded personal best in both events a year ago, with just under two minutes in the 800m at 1:59.91, and 4:13.69 in the 1500m.

On the women's side, freshman Angel Freeman will join the Thorobrettes in the shot put and discus.

"Angel joins us with a lot of championship experience," said Shabazz. "During her junior season, she won Districts in the shot put with a 37'2 throw to earn a trip to the OHSAA State Regional Championship where she placed 8th with a throw of 35'8. She continued to improve during her senior season with a personal record of 38'8.5 earning her first trip to the OHSAA State Championship where she placed 7th overall and another personal record of 39'8.5."

Four female student-athletes will be pulling double duty as competitors for cross-country and women's basketball. Erica Jones, Lyndsey Downing, Sierra James, and Perri Mitchel will all make their KSU debuts as members of the cross-country team before taking to the hardwood for head coach Terrance Slater in November. All four may join the track team once the basketball season concludes.
